Car Engineering

Learn about mechanics, electronics & coding, as you build a computerised car

You'll construct a miniature RC car & customised control system using an F1-style computerised steering wheel .  Together with an FPV camera and headset, you'll have the ultimate racing experience.

This is no simulator. You'll feel like you're in the cockpit of a real race car – albeit a miniature one - so you'll have to hone your driving skills to avoid crashing your vehicle.

This is also no toy. With a computerised transmitter (a motion-controlled steering wheel) and a computerised receiver, you can customise every aspect of the driving experience from menus to steering, speed, and custom moves.

Car Engineering In Detail

You'll learn how to build, repair and customise an RC car and find out about the physics of cars. Just like real race cars, success on the track is not just about the driver, but the technical skills of the engineering team.

You'll build your own programmable F1-style steering wheel to control everything. This has an embedded computer module, and the car also has a similar module. You'll create everything from the mechanical parts to the electronics and also code the programs to control the steering wheel and receiver in the car so you can customise the steering, speed control and even make programmable buttons do 'power moves'!. This is the perfect course for tomorrow's automotive engineers and designers, those who like creating their own technology, and those with a passion for high-speed game play.

The cars are 1/10th scale, around 42cm long - however, they are very, very fast so when you get home, driving them inside isn't advisable. They can, however, handle fairly rough terrain, so somewhere like a large field, tennis court or a sports hall are all great places to race them.

01

Building the car

You'll start by building the mechanics of the car from the ground up. This is not for the feint-hearted! With hlelp from your tutor you'll assemble everything yourself including parts like the suspension and differential from hundreds of individual pieces.

02

Building the electronics

The electronic build is also quite sophisticated. You'll solder together the computerised steering wheel and receiver, before testing everything out on the track!

03

Driving & customising

You'll race against other campers and also customise the programming of your car. With a programmable transmitter and receiver, and a graphical screen on the steering wheel, you can control everything from start-up screens to speeds & special moves.
